Extension Education: Definition

Extension Definition:

According to D. Ensminger - Extension is a program and a process of helping village people to help themselves, increase their production, and to raise their general standard of living.

According to B. Rambhai - Extension is a two-way channel; it brings scientific information to the village people and also takes the problems of the village people to the scientific institution for a solution. It is a continuous educational process, in which both learner and teacher contribute and receive.

What is Extension Education?

According to Reddy A Adivi - Extension Education is a science which deals with the creation, transmission, and application of knowledge designed to bring about planned changes in the behaviour-complex of people, with a view to helping them live better by learning the ways of improving their vocations, enterprises, and institutions.

According to Leagans J.P: ―Extension education is the process of teaching rural people how to live better by learning new things that are important in their farm, home, and community institutionsǁ.

According to Ensminger: "Extension is an education and its purpose is to change the attitude and practices of the people with whom the work is done.

According to O. P. Dahama: "Extension Education is defined as an educational process to provide knowledge to the rural people about the improved practices in a convincing manner and to help their decisions with in their specific local conditions."

According to O. P. Dahama & O. P. Bhatnagar: "Extension Education is a behavioral science following a continuous, persuasive and discriminating educational process. It aims at affecting the behavioral components of people in a desirable direction through conviction, communication, and diffusion, by its proven methods, principles, and philosophies resulting in learning involvement of both client and change agent systems.

Concept of Extension Education: Extension education is education for the betterment of people and for changing their behavior i.e. knowledge, skill, and attitude.

1. Knowledge: It includes facts, concepts, principles, and relationship

2. Attitude: An attitude can be loosely defined as a feeling towards some object, person, and situation or idea.

3. Skills: Ability to do things.

Knowledge or cognitive Eg: Extension worker educates a farmer on cultivation practices in sweet corn (change in knowledge).

Attitude or affective Eg: Extension worker changes the negative attitude of a women farmer and makes them adopt Mushroom cultivation (things felt)

Skills or psychomotor Eg: Extension worker improves skills of a cotton farmer on stem application of pesticide (things done)

Extension education is the dissemination of useful research findings and ideas among rural people to bring out desirable changes in their social and cultural behavior.

OR

Extension education in applied behavioral science, the knowledge of which is to be applied for desirable changes in the behavioral complex of the people.
